In Praise of Nursing Cats

"This was taken several years ago when Mini Harina forgot to use birth control, got pregnant, and had about a billion black kittens. They all found good homes and were weaned and eating food by this point but she was such a good mother that she always let them nurse no matter how big they were and how much it inconvenienced her. Now that's a good mother cat." Hmmm, that's a good mother period in my book. :)
Would ya look at all these beautiful colors!

This brood is not quite as big, but that mama belly looks pretty crowded!

When Breastfeeding is Accepted, It Won't Be Noticed
New Breastfeeding Campaign Turns Heads

Group introduces unique ad campaign
By SAJID FAROOQ
No it's not time to change your glasses. You really are seeing more women breastfeeding in public.
The woman standing by the mailbox has been breastfeeding for hours. Same with the lady sitting on the bench. They, and two of their friends, are going to be breastfeeding all over Marin County, Calif. in the coming weeks.
But if you look closely you might notice that looks can be deceiving.
A series of life-sized photographs of women breastfeeding their babies, cut-out and plastered on poster board, is all part of an eye-catching campaign to encourage and promote the acceptance of breastfeeding in public.
“Breastfeeding is recognized as the standard for infant feeding by all major health organizations,” said lactation consultant and coalition member Susan Martinelli. “Mother’s milk provides the best nutritional, immunological and emotional nurturance for the normal growth and development of babies. No manufactured formula offers anything close.”
The life-like cutouts of the “women and their babies will make their debut this week at The Village shopping center in Corte Madera, near a children’s play area.
Marin Breastfeeding Coalition, an advocacy group, has launched the campaign to raise breastfeeding awareness and support.
During a recent test run in San Rafael, the cutouts drew dozens of gawking eyes and confused second looks. Each cut-out figure is holding a card which reads, “When breastfeeding is accepted, it won’t be noticed.”
The Marin Breastfeeding Coalition said it would love for everyone to notice the campaign and to question why they were even paying so much attention to a breastfeeding mother in the first place.
The group wants the public to know that breastfeeding in public is perfectly acceptable and that it is actually protected by law.

Cali, Part 4, Everywhere Else
Sarah really wanted me to see Katie's house in Newport, so we planned to head down there on Friday afternoon. The place was amazing. Sarah has been telling me about it for ages. Everything is custom designed and built. The entryway looks like a courtyard, with an imported fountain. There is ancient Venetian stone incorporated throughout the house and outdoor area. Some of the walls completely fold away to give the feeling of being on a patio, which is amazing on a beautiful Southern California Autumn afternoon, especially so as they have a view of the ocean. Katie's mom, Susan, is really into spirituality from all over the world and even has a room devoted to the feminine divine where she holds Goddess meetings.
Of course Orion's favorite place was the pool, which, by the way, has a waterslide and separate waterfall cascading into the pool, with a little grotto and seating area behind the falling water. I really should have taken more pictures of the house, but I didn't want to look like a tourist LOL! Oh, and the pool and spa were all saltwater. No chlorine - heavenly!
Orion also laid claim to this floatie.
They had two big dogs he had a blast with.
OK, does this picture look like an ad or is it just me?
Akasha, Sarah and Katie. This picture cracks me up because Akasha looks so interested in what Katie is eating. She actually looks like she is craning her head to check out what is in her hand.

After dinner, Susan and I sat and talked for quite awhile - mainly about Akasha. Susan held her for a long time, and I wasn't sure I would get her back! Who could blame her? ;) The interesting thing was how she started telling me all this stuff she was picking up on. The first thing was that Akasha is a healer. She said she is from a long line of medicine women and is connected into that circle. She thought she was most recently a healer from the Eskimo regions, but then she said she was getting Hawaiian vibes as well. She kept saying she was "pure love". Aren't all babies, though? :) But then she got really serious and told me Akasha was one of the oldest souls she had ever encountered and that she was going to have alot to teach us all. Whoa. I may have a big responsibility on my hands!
We were invited to spend the night, but I decided to head out. I think it was a good decision as Akasha slept almost the whole way back. The traffic on the 405 sucked getting down there, and we had to make a couple stops, and it might not have been much better going the other way in the daytime, even on a Saturday.
On Sunday we went to visit my mom's grave.
The Circle of Life
The view up the hill. Several of our family members and friends are buried here, so they like to joke about them partying at night. Yes, I come from a clan of drinkers.
We decided to stop at the Simi mall on the way home as it was a hot day and they have a water feature I thought Orion would enjoy. We went to the bathroom first, and I saw the dumbest sign ever:
Said rooms:
Gramps and the little monkey chillin' in the shade.
Sarah was incredibly helpful. She cooked, she cleaned, she helped with Orion. My dad would cry when we all sat down to dinner together because he said it was so nice. I didn't expect him to still be this sad. :( He would start crying over the littlest thing, like getting a hot dog at Costco and talking about how much my mom had liked them. His memory has also gotten WAY worse, and he isn't going out much. I am worried about him, but I know he would never consider going into a retirement community. I don't know if memory ever gets worse then better in response to a crisis period, but I have my fingers crossed he will get a little better after awhile.
We have decided to drive back in my dad's van, and Sarah is going to come with us, then use part of our train credit to go back to CA. Hopefully it won't take us more than 2 or 3 days!

A True Breastmilk Vanguard...
Swiss restaurant to serve meals cooked with human breast milk
A Swiss gastronomist has stirred a controversy in the tranquil Alpine republic after announcing that he will serve meals cooked with human breast milk.
The owner of the Storchen restaurant in the exclusive Winterthur resort will improve his menu with local specialities such as meat stew and various soups and sauces containing at least 75 per cent of mother's milk.
"We have all been raised on it. Why should we not include it into our diet?" Hans Locher, who has become Switzerland most controversial restaurant owner, said.
Mr Locher attracted the attention of the leading media of the German-speaking world this week after he posted ads looking for women donors, who will receive just over three pounds for 14 ounces of their milk.
He said: "I first experimented with breast milk when my daughter was born.
"One can cook really delicious things with it. However, it always needs to be mixed with a bit of whipped cream, in order to keep the consistency."
The food control authority in Switzerland was initially confused by the apparent loophole in local legislation regulating the use of human milk and it was not clear whether Mr Locher could actually be banned from serving his specialities.
"Humans as producers of milk are simply not envisaged in the legislation.
"They are not on the list of approved species such as cows and sheep, but they are also not on the list of the banned species such as apes and primates," Rolf Etter of the Zurich food control laboratory said.

My husband...
Child Advocate...
Natural Birth Activist...
So Ron has taken to accosting strangers in stores. LOL, not really, but he has started several conversations recently. He talked to two different families looking at formula recently about the benefits of breastfeeding. Then he talked to a couple at Trader Joe's about why he wasn't yelling at Orion. He said the dad seemed more interested than the mom! He told them to go home and Google Alfie Kohn and Gordon Neufeld if they want more info haha.
But the biggest thing that has happened lately is his discussion of The Business of Being Born on a mainstream forum he mods. These are mostly younger folks, and alot of them actually went and watched it. One girl even said she couldn't imagine doing it any other way now!
And for today's picture, the first of many scenes like this I am sure. :)

Chinese Policewoman Breastfeeds Quake Victims
The recent news coming out of China has been just heartbreaking for me, especially thinking about all the children that died while in schools. But amidst all the sadness, here is a story that gave me happy tears.
CHENGDU, China - A Chinese policewoman is contributing to the country’s massive earthquake relief effort in a very personal way -- by breastfeeding eight babies.
A newspaper in Chengdu, the capital of quake-hit Sichuan province, devoted a special page to the 29-year-old woman, calling her a “hero.”
The woman from the quake-ravaged town of Jiangyou has just had a child herself, the Western Urban Daily said.
She is nursing the children of three women who were left homeless by the quake and are too traumatised to give milk, as well as five orphans, the report said.
The babies who lost their parents have been put in an orphanage which does not have powdered milk, it said.
An estimated 50,000 people were killed in the May 12 earthquake, China’s worst natural disaster in a generation.
